- För att bestämma ett fartygs position måste man veta både vinkeln mot ekvatorn, latituden, och läget i ost-västlig riktning, longituden. Tidigt lärde man sig att nödtorftigt mäta latituden med vinkelmätningsinstrument, men longituden var svårare. Man fann ingen praktisk lösning förrän engelsmannen John Harrison 1761 konstruerade ett mycket exakt ur, en kronometer. Snart framställdes kronometrar också i Sverige och en mycket skicklig tilverkare var Victor Söderberg, först verksam i visby och från 1840 i Stockholm. Den berömde kronometerfabrikören Victor Kullberg i London gick i lära hos Söderberg.
