Ullensaker museum deltok med et utstillingsprosjekt om Dyreetikk og disiplinering i fellesprosjektet Husdyr på museum i Akershusmuseet (MiA) 2007. I forbindelse med prosjektet fotodokumenterte museet Norges Blindeforbunds Førerhundskole.
Vi møtte opp på Førerhundskolen på Bestum og derfra fulgte vi etter en bil med otte førerhundkandidater til Norges Blindeforbund på Majorstua. Der var vi med på en treningsrunde med en kastrert 1 1/2 år gammel lys labrador og en førerhundtrener. Under byturen fulgte vi hund og trener over veikryss, langs trafikkerte gater og fortau med mange gående. vi tok også trikk. Turen gikk til nærmeste park.
Norges Blindeforbunds Førerhundskole ble opprettet i 1971. I begynnelsen holdt de til i Vestby før de flyttet til Bestum i 1985. Blindeforbundets førerskole har 20 fast ansatte trenere. Skolen har både pensjonat for brukere, kennel og dyreklinikk. Førerhundene rekrutteres fra skolens egen kennel. Det arbeides internasjonalt når det gjelder avl og det foregår bl.a. ved inseminering. Alle hundene er kastrert når de leveres brukeren. Det er i dag ca. 300 førerhunder.
Alle hunderaser kan brukes som førerhund, men labrador og retriever foretrekkes. Også schäffere og kongepudler trenes som førerhunder. Det er brukeren som bestemmer rasen. Førerhundskolen har rundt 70 valper i året. Når de er ca. 8 uker plasseres de hos fôrverter i 1 1/2 - 2 år. I denne perioden deltar hundene på noen samlinger. Systemet er basert på frivillighet. Det er viktig at hundene får oppleve noe i tiden hos fôrvertene, slik at de får erfaring med ulike miljøer og situasjoner. Både hundens medfødte gemytt og erfaringene den har med seg fra tiden hos fôrverten er avgjørende for om hunden egner seg som førerhund. Den må ikke få "dårlige vaner". Hundene som ikke består førerhundtesten, selges ofte tilbake til fôrvertene for en symbolsk sum, eller til andre.
Idealet for en førerhund er at den ikke oppfører seg som en hund. Den skal ikke la seg distrahere av nye, ukjente elementer, og nysgjerrigheten må ikke ta overhånd. Opplæringen av en førerhund foregår over 7 måneder. Hundene trenes fire timer daglig. Mye av treningen går med til lydighets og kontakttrening. I dag brukes "godbit" som et viktig hjelpemiddel i treningen. Metodene har endret seg gjennom tidene. Trenden i dag er at dressuren blir "snillere og snillere". Dette har å gjøre med dagens syn på dyrevelferd. Idealet er at dyrets naturlige instinkter settes i fokus.
Ikke alle hunder passer like bra til alle brukere, og mye tid blir lagt ned på å finne rett hund til rett bruker. Ulike brukere har ulike behov. Før brukeren kan ta med seg en hund, gjennomgår de 3 1/2 ukes samtrening. Denne treningen foregår på Førerhundskolen. Hunden blir lært opp spesielt til sin brukes behov. Førerhundskolen har faste treningsruter, men hunden må i tillegg lære rutene som eieren bruker. Hver ny rute må trenes slik at hund kan veien utenat. Med en førerhund vil brukeren kunne bevege seg tryggere ute og over lengre strekninger.
For hundene kan overgangen fra kennelen til et liv hos brukeren være vanskelig. I kennelen er den i lag med mange hunder, men hos brukeren er den alene. Førerhundskolen følger imidlertid opp med kurs og lokale samlinger. Det blir også et sosialt treff for hundene.
Det er næringsmiddeltilsynet som har med lover og regler knyttet til førerhunder. I §29 i Hygieneforskrift for produksjon og frambud av næringsmidler, står det at en førerhund under føring av blind eller svaksynt ikke kan nektes adgang til lokaler hvor næringsmidler frambys. Et problem som dukker opp er allergikere. Det er derfor viktig at hundene vaskes ofte. Et annet problem er kulturelt bestemt, men det er ikke anledning til å nekte ledsagende førerhund. En førerhund under opplæring er ikke pålagt båndtvang.
