Gårdsnamnet Funneshult är tidigast belagt 1568. Från mitten av 1600-talet (eller tidigare) och fram till 1974 var gården i samma släkts ägo. Hans Nilsson (1798-1885) fick besök av E. Thorén (skollärare i Ljungskile) 1875 och sålde då detta och ytterligare några föremål till Nordiska museet.
Sommaren 1866 vistades Viktor Rydberg i Ljungskile några veckor för att råda bot på sin melankoli. Han företog då en lustresa med ett sällskap till "det enstaka skogshemmanet Funneshult, beläget uppe i fjellbygden, 2 timmars väg från Ljungskile". Resan, hemmanet och dess innehavare Hans Nilsson beskrevs i ett livfullt brev daterat 6 augusti 1866, adresserat till Hedlundska familjen i Göteborg. S.A. Hedlund, chefredaktör för Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfartstidning, var Viktor Rydbergs chef och nära vän. Brevet finns publicerat som nummer 14 i Viktor Rydbergs Brev del 1, i urval av Emil Haverman, Albert Bonniers förlag 1923.
