"Att fiska och jaga
Där ingen kan leva utan att döda
På platser där nästan ingenting kan växa är kött och fisk den viktigaste och ibland enda födan. Jakten på vitaminer, kalorier och protein pågår ständigt. Isvidder, fjäll, hav och sjöar har under årtusenden hållit människor mätta. Jakten har styrts av ritualer och regelverk, för att säkra återväxt och relationen till jaktdjur. Till exempel sägs det att sälarna själva väljer vilken jägare som är värdig att få döda dem.
Där ingen död får förspillas
Där födan är knapp och jakttillfällena få tas allt tillvara. Det näringsrika blodet hålls kvar i sälens kropp med hjälp av särskilda ”blodpluggar”. På vissa delar av Jamalhalvön bevaras renens blod genom ett åtdraget rep runt dess hals. Inget får förspillas. Historisk och modern slakt bygger på att djuret inte hinner inse vad som ska ske. Förhållandet präglas traditionellt av en särskild moral. Man ska ta tillvara och respektera. Visa tacksamhet och vara försiktig med resurserna. Det ska finnas mat även nästa säsong. I dag är både jakt och slakt reglerat i lag.
Fångst åt mänskligheten
Metoderna i det småskaliga fisket skiljer sig åt från plats till plats och görs med redskap som nät, spö och harpun. Storskaligt fiske är idag en jätteindustri i Arktis. På Grönland är det den största inkomstkällan. Företaget Royal Greenland är världens största återförsäljare av kallvattenräkor. Även Norge och Island är stora fiskenationer.
* När temperaturen stiger smälter havsisarna och vattnet blir varmare. Större fiskarters föda, som krill, som trivs i kallare vatten söker sig längre norrut, där de tränger ut de mindre arterna. Däggdjur och fiskeindustrin följer efter de större fiskarnas resa norrut. Ekosystemet rubbas."
