Text in English: One of two dolphins that together form a sculpture group.
Location on ship
The dolphin lies on the forward part of the roof of the upper gallery, starboard side. The dolphin''s companion-piece is No. 02513.
Iconography
Dolphins are one of the most popular elements in marine iconography and thus feature among the Vasa''s sculptures.
In Greek mythology the dolphin was the king of the fish, and was regarded as the companion of fortunate sailors. In Renaissance symbolism the dolphin was also an attribute of Fortuna (Fortuna di mare).
Woodcarver
The woodcarver is unknown. The dolphins are reminiscent of the small dolphins, or other marine animals, that can be seen on the lower parts of the Tritons and Nereids which are also placed on the roofs of the quarter galleries. The two dolphins may possibly be carved by the same artist who carved the Tritons and Nereids.
