Sköld.
Skölden ingår i Vasas riksvapen.

Text in English: The shield is a part of a sculptural composition, which represents the Swedish national coat of arms. It comprises seventeen sculptures of different sizes, together with separately carved parts and details of some of these.
Site location
The coat of arms was found outside the stern.
Location on ship
The Swedish national coat of arms is located to the upper part of the stern, underneath the sculptural composition that forms the crest of the stern. The shield with the three crowns is placed in the first quadrant of the large coat of arms.
Description of the Swedish national coat of arms
The national coat of arms is a large quartered shield, which is designed with a flat and contour-sawn shield base in two parts, on which the heraldic emblems and ornamentation are affixed in the form of separate small shields and ornaments. At the centre of the coat of arms there is an ineschutcheon, crowned by a royal crown.
The shield has a large royal crown and is supported or held by two large crowned lions with heads en face. The summit of the crown probably bore a cross which has worn away or broken off. The surrounding drapery is carved as a curtain which is held back by two winged putti.
The coat-of-arms is, apart from the drapery, almost complete and particularly well-preserved. Sections of the missing drapery have been reconstructed, as has the torb. On the ship, the main shield''''s first quadrant, No. 00816, has been replaced with a replica. The original is exhibited in "The Three Masters".
Heraldic analysis
The Vasa''''s coat of arms illustrates firstly the contemporary "dissolutionist" trend which saw the heraldic emblems of the coat of arms - the crowns, the lion and the sheaf - placed in separate small shields and arranged in various new designs. On the Vasa this tendency toward "dissolution" of the national coat of arms is shown by the insertion of the emblems on separately carved, elegantly curved and earshell-ornamented shields. Secondly the Vasa''''s coat of arms also illustrates heraldic impropriety because the sheaf is topped with a crown.
The inescutcheon of the national coat of arms was usually portrayed without such a crown, so on the Vasa''''s coat of arms the royal crown above the sheaf deviates from contemporary heraldic norms. By crowning the sheaf, the latter was highlighted, given rank, honour and dignity superior to the other emblems. The reason for this is found in ship''''s name: Vasen or Vasan. By crowning the sheaf it was emphasized firstly that the ship was named after the coat of arms of the Royal Family and secondly that the ship was named after the sheaf and not after any of the other emblems. The inescutcheon thus ranked alongside the great Vasa coat of arms on the stern and a vase shield on the beak-head serves as a symbolic representation of the ship''''s name. The location of the sheaf supports the legitimacy of the crown: the inescutcheon appears to stand a little proud of the other shields placing it literally and figuratively in a prominent position.
Woodcarver
The Swedish coat of arms is probably made by Mårten Redtmer.
The reverse side of the shield clearly shows traces of initial work on a lion figure. The woodcarver probably intended to carve a lion shield for the coat of arms from this piece of oak. For some reason he failed at an early stage in the work and was not able to continue the design. The reverse side of the piece was used for the Three Crowns shield instead.
Colour scheme
Analysis of the paint on the shield''''s face has shown that the crown and the edges were gilded, while the background of the shield was painted blue.
