Ikonografi

Text in English: Console designed as back-leaning, male-like head.
Location on ship
The lower part of the lower stern gallery. The sculpture is placed on the centre line, attached to the same beam as the console birds, and is the middle sculpture in the row of birds. It is placed just above the rudder.
Traces of gold were visible when it was brought up from the sea bed.
Iconography
The sculpture is typical of the imaginative grotesque masks and heads that so richly exemplify northern European renaissance art, which is so often seen as the inherent contribution of the Germanic peoples to the classically influenced renaissance ornamentation. They are abundant in the Netherlands'' grotesque publications and they have medieval precursors in the collar-stone sculptures and drollery motifs of Gothic church architecture.
