Text in English: One of six knobs, with ornamentation. The knobs constitute a sculpture group. The knobs decorate the six turrets of the quarter galleries.
Gilded traces were noted on the knob''s globe during salvage. Red traces were noted on the lower tenon.
Location on ship
The knob is situated on the aft lower gallery quarter, on the starboard side. It is fastened by the eight-sided tenon, which is hidden behind the turret''s outer planking.
The knob''s companion-piece is No. 01654. These two knobs are the only ones in this sculpture group with slanted indentations on their middle sections. This is due to their cramped position close to the upper quarter galleries.
Already at an early stage of the restoration work, it soon became clear that the six knobs had decorated the quarter galleries. The number of knobs supported the theory that there were only three turrets on the two galleries on either side of the stern castle. There are no fore turrets on the upper quarter galleries.
Woodcarver
The woodcarver is unknown. Knob No. 00880 and its companion-piece No. 01654 are more modest in their ornamentation and more simply monumental than the others in the sculpture group. Probably we are here confronting another woodcarver than the four others, which are carved by Johann Thesson. The fact that the two more simply decorated knobs were carved in pine, while the other four were carved in limewood further supports this contention.
