Text in English: A section of a wreath belonging to a gun-port. The Vasa was originally decorated with sixteen round gun-port wreaths, which together comprise a sculpture group. Parts of varying size to thirteen of these wreaths have been recovered.
Traces of red and white paint have been found on the ornaments.
Location and function on ship
In addition to the 54 square shaped gun-ports the Vasa also has eighteen circular ones, of which two are located at the stern, while the other sixteen are dispersed equally along the ship''s sides. The ports, which are sawn out of the planking, measure approximately 500 mm in diameter. The circular ports, which were merely open apertures that could not be closed, were intended for guns of lesser calibre (twelve pounders instead of twenty-four pounders on the gun decks).
General description
The sixteen gun-ports which are situated along the port and starboard sides are surrounded by a carved ring or wreath, made of 3-5 separate pieces. Their decorative scheme is of two types; some wreaths are decorated with large open flowers with surrounding calyx-leaves, reminiscent of the so-called Tudor Rose. The others have a more straightforward arrangement of leaves with large, bow-shaped leaves with thickened ends, surrounding a ball. The general measurements of the wreaths were originally circa 700-800 mm for outer diameter, 500 mm for the inner diameter, and 80-90 mm in thickness. The decoration on the two round gun-ports at the stern differ from the other gun-ports and form a separate sculpture group.
Woodcarver is unknown.
