Text in English: One of six knobs, with ornamentation. The knobs constitute a sculpture group, which decorate the six turrets of the quarter galleries. This one differs slightly in that it has a separately carved and removable ornament on top.
Location on ship
The knob is situated on the forward turret of the lower quarter gallery, on the port side. Its companion-piece is No. 05926.
The knob is fastened by the eight-sided tenon, which is hidden behind the turret''s outer planking.
Already at an early stage of the restoration work, it soon became apparent that the six knobs had decorated the quarter galleries. The number of knobs supported the theory that there were only three turrets on the two galleries on either side of the stern castle. There are no fore turrets on the upper quarter galleries.
Woodcarver
Woodcarver is probably Johann Thesson. The plant ornamentation on the knob, and on the three others in the same sculpture group, is of sixteenth century Flemish type. We find the same type of ornamentation in the large Vasa coat of arms on the stern, which is also carved by Thesson.
