Tremastad märssegelskonare

  • I think this painting has been made by the Croatian marine painter Basi (Basil, Vasi) Ivancovich of Trieste (1815-1898). It shows the subject (barkentine FREDERICA WILHELMINA) from two positions. There is also a bark in the right background which flies the combined Austro-Hungarian merchant flag, introduced in 1870. (It would be wonderful to identify this bark. Maybe has some relation to the Swedish barkentine.) The hills in the background are the Croatian coastline of the Adriatic sea.

Ivancovich signed almost all of his paintings, mostly in the lower right corner. I do not see his signature in this painting, but I am quite sure it is his style.

He painted mostly Austrian and Austro-Hungarian vessels, but also some other Scandinavian vessels: the Norwegian brig CUBA, the Swedish bark KRONA, the Danish brig MARIE (all before the Croatian hills).

    Greetings

  • Hi,
Thank you very much for your interesting information! We have nothing about this artist and almost nothing about the ship portrait tradition from this area around the Adriatic see, only from the Italian parts. Really nice to learn some more! I will add your information to the data post, unfortunately only in Swedish.

    Tanks again!
