Slakteriet, eg. KLS Ugglarps AB, Södra vägen 62, har sitt ursprung i ett svinslakteri från 1908. I dag har företaget omkring 500 anställda och där slaktas svin, nötkreatur, får och lamm. Omsättningen uppgår till ungefär 2 000 mkr om året vilket gör det till Sveriges näst största företag inom slakteribranschen. 1934 grundades Kalmar läns slakterier, KLS, som en fortsättning på andelsslakteriet. Medlemmar ur familjen Rappe på ›Christinelund och ›Ryssbylund var då pådrivande. Detta bondeägda företag hade som mest 9 200 andelsägare. Verksamheten utvidgades med både kött- och grönsakskonserver och det byggdes upp en kedja av 43 butiker i länet för slakteriets egna produkter. 1970 såldes butikerna till ICA-EOL. Genom sammanslagning med KLS Kronoberg och inköp av privatslakteriet CCM i Hultsfred växte KLS. 1996 lanserades varumärket SmålandsKött. 1998 fattades det viktiga beslutet att ställa sig utanför Sweden Meats för att istället bilda KLS livsmedel, som 2008 i sin tur såldes till Danish Crown. 2009 slog sig KLS livsmedel, Ugglarps slakteri utanför Trelleborg och DC livsmedel i Köpenhamn samman till KLS Ugglarps AB, som är helägt av Danish Crown. Bland konservmärkena var Bullens pilsnerkorv känt, med namn efter skådespelaren Bullen Berglund.
