  During the 19th century the development of the steam engine took great stides, and a small version was also used in pleasure craft. Due to their minute size, these engines were called colibri engines, and the vessels in wih they were empolyed were accordingly named colibri boats. These boats were owned by well-off families with time to spend on boat trips. The colibri boat in the museum was probably built in the 1880s.

  The boat were vuilt in modern fashion and in accordance with the ideals of the time, often with a plump or stem or perhaps even a ram bow, like the proud ships of the navy. The stern was usuall rounded, with a large fantail, altough the museum's colibri boat does not have this classic steam slope stern. To protect the passangers from soot and smoke the boats had a roof over the cockpit, made of canvas, sheet metal or wood. From this roof evolved what would later become the sallon of the saloon boats.

  The littel boat in the museum has a steam engine developing between 2.5 and 3 indivaterd horsepower. It is a two cylinder high pressure engine, wich means that the vapour pressure is equally high in both cylinders. These are laid out in a V on the same transverse line, which makes it possible for them to work on the same crankpin. The sloop is likley to have reched 6-7 knots in calm waters, a quite considerable speed at the end of the 19th centry.

  The boats was ordered by one of the riches men in Sweden at the time, the telephone magnate Henrik Thore Thorsten Cedergren (1853-1909). Cedergren brought telephony into Sweden, an innovaton as great in the 1870s as the Internet was at the end of the 20th centry. Cedergren founded the Stockholm allmänna telefonaktiebolag (Stockholm General Telephone plc), and at the time of his death he left a fortune of 11 million krona (the equivalent of 500 million krona today).
