The helmet consists of an oval bowl made of sheet brass that is covered with leather on the inside. It is split across the top, with hinges and snaps. The plate is pierced by approx. 350 stud bolts with screw heads. The intention is to be able to measure the shape of the skull with this tool. Phrenology is the study of a supposed connection between human abilities and the external shape of the skull. During the 19th century, a spectacular idea was developed that each characteristic has a location in the brain and when a characteristic develops in an individual, it is followed by the corresponding part of the skull bulging. The phrenologists believed they had identified 35 different bulges. This assumption has later been shown to be unfounded.
