1912 köpte den då 14-årige Harald Lönnqvist sin första kamera. Harald Lönnqvist förvärvade sina färdigheter som fotograf hos samtida fotografer som t.ex. Ferdinand Flodin i Stockholm, Anders Wiklund i Falun och Stockholm samt Hakelier i Örebro.
1924 öppnade han en egen ateljé i Gävle. Efter 10 framgångsrika år som fotograf i Gästrikland flyttade Lönnqvist till Stockholm där han under en period hyrde gamla Atelier Jaeger.
I Stockholm var dock inte fotograf Lönnqvist lika lyckosam som han hade varit i Gävle och efter tre tuffa år i huvudstaden fick han nog och flyttade till Norrköping. 1937 etablerade Harald Lönnqvist sin ateljé på Drottninggatan 1. Verkade som porträttfotograf under hela sin karriär.
Lönnqvist höll sig ifrån fotografkretsarna framför allt i Sverige men deltog desto flitigare i internationella sammanhang. Harald Lönnqvist gick sin egen väg och var t.ex. aldrig medlem i Svenska Fotografers Förbund. Trots att Lönnqvist sällan lät publicera sina bilder uppmärksammades han ändå ofta för sin konst.
Harald Lönnqvist var en internationellt erkänd fotograf och vann medaljer för sitt arbete på utställningar i såväl Europa som USA. Uppskattad och välkänd bland yrkesfolk också för sin skicklighet och sina speciella metoder. 1937 tilldelades Lönnqvist Fotografiska Föreningens Adelssköldmedalj för sitt internationella engagemang.
Den ökade amatörfotograferingen i Sverige och färgbildens intåg upplevdes motbjudande för Lönnqvist som yrkesman. Harald Lönnqvist avvecklade sin ateljé i slutet på 1950-talet och upphörde då helt med fotografin. Istället drog han sig tillbaka och isolerade sig i Örebro.
Harald Lönnqvist var ateljéfotograf, som parallellt också fotograferade mer konstnätliga bilder. Han deltog i internationella utställningar och tävlingar där han fick diplom och medaljer.
1924 bosatte sig Harald Lönnqvist i Gävle. Tio år senare tog han över Ateljé Jaeger i Stockholm. Dock blev han inte så långvarig där utan flyttade vidare till Norrköping. I Norrköping blev han kvar till slutet av 1950-talet.
På 1960-talet drog han sig tillbaka som pensionär i Örebro, med sin hustru Signe.
1982 visades bilder av Harald Lönnqvist från åren 1918 till 1941 på Moderna Museet. Initiativtagare var Leif Wigh, som också intervjuade Harald Lönnqvist på 1980-talet.
