Till kvinnodräkten i Skåne hör en stickad tröja av ull. Den stickades på så tunna stickor att de i uppteckningar kallas "spedor" d.v.s. spetor därav namnet spedetröja. Tröjan är ofta kort och trång, ibland med ett sprund vid halslinningen fram- eller baktill. Tröjan bars under livkjolen och den sydda tröjan av vadmal som användes som ytterplagg.
Tröjorna stickades från början för hand i ett handspunnet ullgarn av mycket tunn och fin kvalitet. Man stickade på stickor 1-1,5 med en masktäthet på över 50 maskor per 10 centimeter. Tröjorna har ett reliefmönster av aviga maskor på en slätstickad botten. På äldre tröjor kan mönstret vara helt eller delvis yttäckande, på andra finns mönstret vid ärmlinning och netill, vid axelpartiet och längs sidolinjen där in - och uttagningar döljs i en dekorativ rand. Senare reducerades mönstret till en rand vid ärmlinning och nedtill. Från 1800-talets slut förekommer även maskinstickade plagg. Tröjan stickades i ofärgat ullgarn sedan valkades och färgades den i rött, grönt, blått, blåsvart eller svart. Spedetröjorna dekorerades också med siden - och sametsband i flerdubbla rader kring hals- och ärmlinning. Tröjornas färg, modell och dekorering varierar beroende på vilken del av Skåne de kommer från.
Den skånska spedetröjans förebild är den stickade silketröja som förekommer i modedräkten under 1500- och 1600-talet. Plagget bars av både män och kvinnor i Europas överklass. De var mönsterstickade eller broderade med guld- och silvertråd. Spedetröjorna är besläktade med de danska och norska natttröjorna.
