I februari 1987 slog Mölndals museum upp sina portar i gamla polishuset på Forsåkersgatan 19 (idag Norra Forsåkersgatan 19) i Mölndals kvarnby.
Tankar om ett kommunalt museum i Mölndal hade funnits sedan slutet av 70-talet, men frågan blev riktigt het när gamla polishuset i Kvarnbyn övergavs 1984.
Hembygdsföreningarna i Mölndal, Kållered och Lindome engagerades, liksom Bohusläns museum i Uddevalla. Som intendent och sedermera museichef anställdes Mari-Louise Olsson från Alingsås museum.
Det museum som öppnade 1987 var ett uttalat "skolmuseum". Det skulle rikta sig till kommunens förskole- och skolbarn, och låta dem uppleva gångna tider. Basutställningarna var byggda som miljöer, där man kunde ha pedagogisk verksamhet, och rymde även en skolsal. Nyckelordet var ett kinesiskt ordspråk: "Det jag hör det glömmer jag. Det jag ser det kommer jag ihåg. Det jag gör det förstår jag." Under slutet av 1990-talet började museet dock att växa ur sitt hus. De allt större samlingarna förvarades i lador och källare. Museet behövde en ordentlig magasinslokal. Samtidigt kändes det gammaldags att ordna ett traditionellt föremålslager, dit bara personalen skulle ha tillträde. Istället lanserade Mölndals museum därför begreppet det öppna magasinet, där alla museets föremål kunde finnas tillgängliga i en stor, flexibel utställning.
Till detta kom idéer om en delvis ny verksamhet, kallad det virtuella museet, där modern informationsteknik kunde användas för att sprida museets vetande. För att förverkliga allt detta krävdes nya, mer rymliga lokaler.
Efter mycket letande och långa förhandlingar löstes lokalfrågan slutligen. I skiftet 2001/2002 flyttades museet, med samlingar och allt, till den gamla industribyggnaden "Strumpan", Kvarnbygatan 12, på krönet av liden (backen) "Kråkan".
2011-01-01 bytte museet namn till Mölndals stadsmuseum.
