I april 1889 överlämnade den tyskfödde ingenjören Eduard Albert (1846-1924) en större samling av ryskt konsthantverk till rådman Albert Carlsson i Vänersborg. Carlsson som aktivt stödde det pågående museibygget i Vänersborg skulle ansvara för att dessa exotiska föremål en dag skulle kunna visas för museibesökarna.
Eduard Albert hade under 1870-80-talen arbetat som ingenjör vid järnvägsbyggen i Ryssland. Bland annat hade han konstruerat flera broar över floder mellan Moskva och Uralbergen.
Tillsammans med sin ryskfödda hustru Marie von Wischinsky samlade Albert en stor mängd konsthantverk och modeller under sin tid i Ryssland. Modellerna utgjordes främst av byggnader, slädar och dräkter. En dominerande del av samlingen var 400 spetsar och band. Dessa, vilka var klosterarbeten, togs till Sverige som någon form av varuprov och kopierades här.
Eduard och Marie Alberts exotiska samling var något som verkligen kom att passa Vänersborgs museum där man vid 1800-talets slut ville visa märkliga och kuriösa föremål från världens alla hörn.
Från 1889 bodde familjen Albert i sin villa i Strömsberg i Trollhättan. I sin nya hemstad bidrog Albert bland anna till planeringen av egnahemsamhället Strömslund samt donation av medel till Maria Alberts Stiftelse, vilket senare kom att omvandlas till Maria Alverts Sjukhem.
