Motiv från Östra Strandpromenaden i Linköping. Fotograf Essen stod vid tillfället ungefär vid nuvarande Drottningbros östra fäste. Vid tiden för bilden var den egentliga benämningen på gångstråket Brunnspromenaden, då den i första hand anlagts för att nå Ladugårdskällas hälsobringande vatten. Dagens strandpromenader mellan Stångebro och Tannefors anlades upplysningsvis först omkring 1930. I övrigt visar bilden en skymt av lägenheten Åbacka till vänster och till höger Övre hamnens stensatta kaj.

Didrik von Essen lämnade efter sig omkring 1200 glasnegativ och ungefär lika många monterade positiv som tillfallit Östergötlands museum. Den bevarade delen av hans fotografiska produktion spänner från 1880-talets sista år till åtminstone 1915. Till största delen utgör samlingen dokumentation av hans hemstad Linköping i förändring. Vid sidan av den typen motiv förekommer landskapsstudier som utgjort förlagor för hans parallella landskapsmåleri.
