Elis Eriksson föddes i Åmot 1891. Hans arbete i skogen förde honom till norra Norrland där han tillbringade hela sitt yrkesverksamma liv. Efter pensioneringen var han mycket i sin hembygd på somrarna. Det var också där han tog större delen av sina fotografier.
Elis far, Olof, hade speceri- och diversehandel i Åmot. Han dog tidigt och hans hustru Anna fick ensam ansvaret för handelsboden och de fem barnen. Elis skickades till Gävle för att läsa på läroverket. Där köpte han 1903 sin första kamera för sex kronor. Efter studenten utbildade han sig till forstmästare, en titel som idag närmast motsvaras av jägmästare.
Elis Eriksson fotograferade gärna skogsarbetare i färd med att avverka skog, kola och flotta. Men han tog också landskaps- och porträttbilder. Elis familj var både konstnärlig och musikalisk, vilket avspeglar sig i bildmaterialet som innehåller många musikanter.
Samlingen, som innehåller över 2100 glasplåtar och bladfilmsnegativ, skänktes till Länsmuseet Gävleborg i mitten av 1980-talet. Bilderna är registrerade, digitaliserade och sökbara i Länsmuseets webbdatabas.
