William föddes 1908 som son till Frida och Mauritz. Han bodde i Kvarnbyn, snett bakom gamla stadshuset vid Gamla Torget. Som barn arbetade han som springpojke för Asklunds bageri och för Sofia ”Soffi” Halvordsons bageri. Soffis bageri låg på Friareliden (nuvarande Samuel Norbergsgatan).
Cykling var ett stort intresse. Det fanns inte så många andra sätt att ta sig fram.
William började cykla på 1920-talet. Han var med i Mölndals cykelklubb och aktiv som tävlingscyklist från 20-talets slut och under 1930-talet. Vann Säröloppet 1928, 1931 och 1932. Var inkallad i Norrland och det tycks som om han slutade tävla efter kriget. Möjligen var han sponsrad av Monark. Det var alltid Monark, aldrig tal om Crescent. Sålde inte Crescent.
William sålde sportutrustning, cyklar och tillbehör och hade cykelverkstad. William Olssons Velocipedaffär. Han sålde även TV och radio. Hade firman fram till 1977. Först låg den på Kungabackavägen, invid gamla slingan (på östra sidan) i ett smalt trähus. Affären flyttade omkring 1955 till Tempelgatan. Den låg vid hörnet Tempelgatan och gångvägen in mot centrum (Medborgarestigen). På baksidan låg verkstaden. Brodern Bertil, född ca 1917, drev filial vid Gamla Torget.
William var alltid bussig mot barn, han var inte så noga med att ta betalt. Det var många grabbar som samlades i hans verkstad.
