Målningen är utförd av Friedrich Winters sommaren 1945 och föreställer interneringslägret på Ränneslätt utanför Eksjö. Winters tjänstgjorde som sonderführer inom förbandet "Tankholzkomdo 32" i den tyska armén under andra världskriget. Han var född den 9 juni 1903, gift med Anni Winters och bosatt i Düsseldorf.
I samband med krigsslutet befann han sig med den tyska armén i Kurland, (i nuvarande Lettland), varifrån han lyckades fly till Gotland, där han blev tillfångatagen den 9 maj 1945. Därifrån fördes han till interneringslägret vid Ränneslätt utanför Eksjö den 14 maj 1945. Han blev registrerad som fånge nr IR/1010. Interneringslägret vid Ränneslätt var ett av flera svenska militära interneringsläger för utländska soldater under andra världskriget. I Ränneslätt-lägret hölls omkring 1000 tyska och ett hundratal baltiska soldater fångna under 1945.
Winters arbetade som personalvårdsassistent i lägret. Han var även konstnär och fungerade som ansvarig utgivare för lägertidningen "Die Neue Lagerzeitung" som utkom dagligen i ett enda exemplar. Tidningen fästes på en anslagstavla inne i lägerområdet och lästes av cirka 1000 man varje dag. Förutom notiser, sporthändelser, tecknade serier och annonser innehöll den reportage och information om händelser och aktiviteter i lägret.
Sovjetunionen utövade politiska påtryckningar på den svenska regeringen för att få de internerade soldaterna utlämnade. I juni 1945 beslöt den svenska samlingsregeringen att tillmötesgå de sovjetiska önskemålen och utlämna alla tyska och baltiska soldater som flytt till Sverige österifrån från maj månad 1945. Försvarsstabens invändningar mot beslutet, protester, hungerstrek och självmord bland internerna, samt andra praktiska hinder gjorde att det dröjde ett antal månader innan beslutet kunde verkställas.
Den 28 november 1945 fördes Winters från interneringslägret vid Ränneslätt till Eksjö garnison, och därifrån vidare till Borås den 3 december. Den 15 december 1945 lämnade Sverige ut honom till Sovjetunionen tillsammans med 527 andra tyska interner. De hämtades av det sovjetiska lasarettsfartyget Bjeloostrov i Trelleborgs hamn och fördes till Libau i dåvarande Sovjetunionen (nuvarande Lettland). Under färden var alla instängda i lastutrymmet och fartyget eskorterades av ryska minsvepare. Deras vidare öden är okända.
I efterhand har utlämningen av tyska och baltiska krigsfångar till Sovjetunionen fått mycket skarp kritik. Omständigheterna kring interneringslägren och utlämningarna har undersökts och flera av de inblandade har varit föremål för rättslig prövning.
Målningen köptes år 1945 av Carl Tydén, officer vid Ing2 i Eksjö under andra världskriget. 2017 skänktes målningen till Armémuseum av Carl Tydéns dotter.
