Här visar vi fotografier tagna av läraren, kantorn och bygdefotografen Gunnar Engström (1896–1968) från Sällstorp. Hallands kulturhistoriska museum mottog samlingen 2022 från Veddige-Ås-Sällstorps hembygdsförening. Merparten av bilderna är från Sällstorp, Grimmared och Veddige. Fotografierna uppskattas vara tagna huvudsakligen mellan1913-1923.
Fotosamlingen hittades vid 1960-talets mitt på vinden i Sällstorps småskola av en man kallad ”Skole-Gunnar” och innehöll även bilder tagna av Davida Svensson i Ry med flera. Med tiden kom bilderna i hembygdsföreningens ägo, där Herbert Johansson skannade dem och förvaltade arkivet fram till år 2017, då Ingvar Månsson tog över det och bearbetade det digitala materialet. Tidens tand har tyvärr gett många av negativen skador.
OM GUNNAR ENGSTRÖM
Gunnar Engströms morfar Carl Engström (1816–1895) blev 1865 Sällstorps förste examinerade folkskolelärare i den nybyggda skolan med bostad, samt organist och klockare. Befattningarna övertogs sedan av hans dotter Constance Engström (1860–1923).
Hans andra dotter Bertha (1867–1945) var utbildad småskollärararinna men blev gravid som ogift, födde Gunnar den 20 mars 1896 som fördes till ett barnhem. De förenades när Gunnar var fyra år och när Bertha fick tjänsten i Sällstorps nya småskola (klass 1-2). Gunnar avlade folkskollärarexamen i Göteborg och tog år 1921 över stafettpinnen efter sin moster Constance som lärare i Sällstorps folkskola och kantor i församlingen. 1923 byggdes en ny folkskola där han tjänstgjorde fram till skolcentraliseringen 1952, då han förflyttades till Veddige. Han engagerade sig starkt i lokalsamhället på många plan med många förtroendeuppdrag och höll även otaliga föredrag vid arrangemang av ungdomsorganisationer. Efter pensionen flyttade han med frun Karin till Varberg. Gunnar dog den 25 maj 1968.
