Maja Andersson Wirde (1873-1952) , var född Maria Andersson i ett prästhem i Ramkvilla. Hon utbildade sig till teckningslärarinna i Stockholm och gjorde en del studieresor utrikes, bl a till London där hon fascinerades av Arts & Crafts-rörelsen och till Italien. Från 1907 var hon anställd vid Handarbetets Vänner i Stockholm där hon formgav mattor och annat, bl a till Patentverket i Stockholm och en hel del större företag. Hon gjorde dessutom mattor till m/s Kungsholm och fick också en del privata uppdrag.
Liksom Märta Måås-Fjetterström specialiserade hon sig på mattor i röllakan och flossa. 1929 slutade hon sin anställning vid Handarbetets Vänner och begav sig över till USA, där hon fick arbete på det nystartade Cranbrook Academy of Art, i Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Där fanns redan en liten koloni skandinaver, bl a arkitekten Eliel Saarinen med fru Loja (textilkonstnärinna), skulptören Carl Milles m.fl. Loja Saarinen och Maja Andersson Wirde (som hon nu kallade sig) började ett tätt samarbete som kom att pågå i flera år.
Maja Andersson Wirde stannade på Cranbrook Academy of Art till 1933. Efter ett år i Chicago återvände hon hem till Sverige och bosatte sig i Algutsboda. Där slog hon in på en delvis ny bana, och började formge kyrkliga textilier (kormattor, mässhakar, antependier m.m.) i uppdrag för Södra Sveriges Kyrkliga Textil, för en mängd kyrkor i södra Sverige, t ex Gullabo, Vissefjärda, Karlskrona Amiralitetskyrka, Traryd, Berg och Kånna.
