1859 bildades Mölndals Viktualieförening, en kooperativ förening, som till billigt pris skulle skaffa matvaror till sina medlemmar. Överskottet skulle användas till bidrag för uppförande och underhåll av bland annat ett sjukhus.
Omkring 1870 uppfördes Mölndals Viktualieförenings sjukhus, som även skulle vara barnbördshus. Byggkostnaden var 30.000 riksdaler och antalet sängar var 28. I sjukhuset bodde en sjuksköterska, som avlönades av föreningen med 530 kronor om året. På uppdrag av byns läkare skulle hon utan ersättning hjälpa sjuka föreningsmedlemmar. Landstinget ville dock inte bevilja Mölndal några pengar, varför sjukhuset mestadels stod obegagnat. En tid uppläts en sal åt IOGT.
Viktualieföreningen avvecklades i början av 1890-talet, men 1886 beviljade landstinget ett årligt anslag. Tack vare dessa pengar från landstinget, bidrag från Viktualieföreningen och anslag från Fässbergs kommun fick sjukstugan sin förste läkare, doktor Knut Belfrage. Sjukstugan skulle ta emot patienter från Askims och Sävedalens härader. Antalet vårdplatser blev emellertid aldrig fler än 24. År 1924 stod det nya lasarettet vid Göteborgsvägen färdigt, och den gamla sjukstugan tömdes.
En tid bodde ”brackegubbar” (män från ett ålderdomshem) i huset.
1934 flyttade polisen in i undervåningen. Socialkontoret och exekutionsväsendet tog hand om övervåningen, men så småningom blev poliserna ensamma i huset. 1984 flyttade de till det nya polishuset. Därefter började huset byggas om till museum.
Från 1985 fram till 2002 fanns Mölndals Museum i lokalerna. Museet flyttade vidare till "Strumpan" på Kvarnbygatan 12 och 2011-01-01 bytte museet namn till Mölndals stadsmuseum. Efter detta har privata intressen övertagit fastigheten.
