Bilden har tagits i samband med kulturhistorisk karakterisering av Helga Trefaldighets kyrka, kvarteret Oden, Fjärdingen, Uppsala februari 2006.
Helga Trefaldighets kyrka ligger inom domkyrkoområdet i centrala Uppsala. Området domineras av ett antal monumentalbyggnader och är en historiskt förtätad stadsmiljö. Närmast norrut ligger Dekanhuset, ett fyravånings stenhus i klassicistisk stil från 1740-talet, som fick sin nuvarande fasad år 1837. Närmast söderut ligger ett tvåvånings bostadshus med tegelfasader. Byggnaden består i sin östra del av en medeltida bod uppförd i tegel i två våningar och är troligen byggd samtidigt med Trefaldighetskyrkan. Den var ursprungligen socknens tiondelada. Huset fick sitt nuvarande utseende vid en ombyggnad 1906, då det gjordes om till prästbostad och församlingssal. Nybyggnaden utfördes i en medeltidsinspirerad tegelarkitektur med blinderingsnischer på gavlarna.
På andra sidan Odinslund ligger Ärkebiskopsgården från 1700-talet. Mittemot kyrkan, på dess västra sida, ligger ett trevånings nyrenässanshus från 1876. I Odinslund, närmast väster om kyrktornet, står en obelisk rest till minne av Gustav II Adolf år 1832. Obelisken är ritad av konstnären Louis Jean Desprez.
Marken närmast kyrkan är grusad. Den nyttjas till stor del som bilparkering. Stenpollare med järnkättingar avgränsar kyrkotomten från Odinslund. Flera trafikskyltar som upplyser om parkeringsplatser samt parkeringsautomater sätter också sin prägel på kyrkans närmiljö. Nordost och öster om kyrkan finns en sluttning ner mot Riddartorget och Nedre Slottsgatan. En stensatt trappa leder ner till Riddartorget.
Helga Trefaldighets kyrka utgör sockenkyrka för Helga Trefaldighets socken som tidigare gick under namnet Bondkyrko socken. Kyrkan kallades därför Bondkyrkan. Enligt Peringskiöld är kyrkan vigd till Sankt Staffan. En georadarundersökning från 2005 visar att den nuvarande Trefaldighetskyrkan haft en föregångare som legat på platsen för Uppsala domkyrka. När domkyrkan började uppföras på 1270-talet flyttades Trefaldighetskyrkan till en ny plats ca 100 m söderut. Där nyuppfördes den som en träkyrka och försågs snart med en sakristia av tegel.
Den nuvarande Trefaldighetskyrkan uppfördes på 1300-talet, på platsen för träkyrkan, som en treskeppig basilika med murar av gråsten och tegel, ornerad med vitputsade blinderingar. Den befintliga sakristian bevarades och den utgör således kyrkans äldsta del. Vapenhuset i norr förmodas vara lika gammalt som långhuset. Att vapenhus och ingång ligger mot norr är mycket ovanligt, men kan i det här fallet förklaras med att de som byggde kyrkan ville att ingången skulle ligga vänd mot den stora öppna planen söder om domkyrkan, en plan som var en central plats i medeltidsstaden Uppsala. Kyrkan har vidare ett tegeltorn i väster och två korsarmar som antas ha byggts omkring år 1400. Den södra korsarmen byggdes samman med sakristian och försågs med en bred tegelgavel ornerad med en vitkalkad blindering i form av ett kors. Sakristians ursprungliga gavelbredd är tydligt avläsbar i murverket. Troligen på 1400-talet byggdes även vapenhuset till på höjden. Också på vapenhuset är den ursprungliga gavelprofilen synlig i tegelmuren. Innan tornet byggdes i väster, hade kyrkan en ståtlig västgavel med stora, vitputsade spetsbågsformade blinderingar. Delar av den ursprungliga västgaveln kan idag ses uppe i tornet.
Kyrkan har spetsbågiga fönsteröppningar med blyspröjsade järnfönster. Sakristian har dock ett fönster med träbågar i nygotisk stil, bakom ett smidesgaller. Källarvåningen till sakristian har även bevarat en liten, medeltida fönsterglugg. Korgaveln i öster har tre höga, spetsbågiga fönster försedda med glasmålningar. Mittskeppets klerestorievåning har cirkelrunda fönsteröppningar. Samtliga fönstersmygar är putsade och vitkalkade. Takfoten runt hela kyrkan är försedd med en profilerad, putsad och vitkalkad taklist från 1700-talet. Även tornets murar avslutas uppåt av en putsad taklist.
