Inför den stora omläggningen av väg E4 genom Uppland undersöktes år 2002 en boplats från järnålder vid Brillinge nordost om Uppsala. I området fanns sedan tidigare kända uppgifter om flera rika och ovanliga gravfynd från den tiden. Den lämning som undersöktes rörde endast en del av en större boplats och den var tämligen enkel och fyndfattig i sin karaktär. Av stort intresse var dock att det på platsen framkom flera hus varav ett var bland de största från den här tiden som påträffats i Uppland. Efter undersökningen framstår om man under den här tiden kan ha manifesterat rikedom eller status genom att bygga stora hus som en särskilt intressant fråga. Om så är fallet har huset i Brillinge troligen varit en del av en bebyggelse med hög status, som kanske kan betecknas som en stormannagård, vilket också kan stödjas av de ovanliga fynden. I anslutning till boplatsområdet finns flera gravfält. Dessa kan i äldre tid ha varit större eller ha varit fler än vad som är känt idag. En indikation på detta är att det vid undersökningen även framkom en grav, en urnegrop med brända ben som daterats till förromersk järnålder. De brända benen hade lagts i ett sytt barkkärl som tätats med harts. Den äldre kvinna som begravts hade fått en sländtrissa i ben som gravgåva.
