Västeråkers kyrka är en av Upplands märkligaste och bäst bevarade kyrkor från medeltiden. Den kan karakteriseras som en folkungatida stormannakyrka.
Kyrkan är byggd i gråsten och tegel. Yttre murskalet är av gråsten medan det inre är av tegel. Den uppfördes med långhus, smalare kor och sakristia. Förmodligen är även vapenhuset i söder ursprungligt från 1300-talet. Redan från början välvdes kyrkan med tegelvalv. Den gotiska arkitekturen förstärks med utvändiga strävpelare i hörnen och mitt på långhusets fasader. I södra korväggen finns ett igenmurat gotiskt masverksfönster. Övriga fönster är stora och rundbågiga och fick sin form år 1829. Fasaderna är spritputsade och vitkalkade. Fönstersmygarna är slätputsade. En egenhet med kyrkan är att korets fasader är något högre än långhusets. Långhus och kor täcks av ett gemensamt, brant sluttande sadeltak täckt med tjärade spån. Även sakristians och vapenhusets tak täcks av spån. Stuprör och hängrännor är monterade för vattenavrinningen. Fönstren är försedda med blyspröjsade fönsterbågar av brunmålat trä. Fönsterbänkar och strävpelare är avtäckta med falsad plåt.
