S/S Avena hette ursprungligen Glen Isla och var byggd i Sunderland 1873. Hon var en skonare av järn med en längd av 60 meter och en bredd av 8,5 meter.
Maskinen var på 95 hästkrafter och lastförmågan 484 registerton, en 3 - cylindrig trippelexpansionsmaskin byggd av Ouseburn Engine Works, Sunderland, cylinderdiametrar 14 11/16, 24* & 48*, slaglängd 33. ångtryck 150 lb.
Uddevallabaserade bolaget Rederi AB Avena köpte båten 1874 och i april detta år hämtades hon i England av kapten W. R. Svanberg.
Under tiden 1875 - 1885 var Avena bolagets enda båt. Hon gick huvudsakligen mellan Uddevalla och London med last av havre, papper, tändstickor och trä. Resor förekom även till bl a Arkangelsk, Cronstadt, Riga, Rouen, Calais, Stockholm, Le Havre och Antwerpen.
Då ytterligare båtar tillkom 1885 och 1890 blev Avenas resor till London mera regelbundna med i regel en resa var 14:e dag. I allmänhet tog resan ungefär två och ett halvt dygn och lasttiden 4 dagar. Returlasten var ofta kol, som dock var smutsig och tidsödande att lasta och lossa, varför hemresan ofta skedde ballast. Kolen hämtades i Sunderland, Hull, Newcastle eller Hartlepool. Tidvis fanns i lasten till England lingon, sill och boskap.
Även passagerare kunde förekomma, då mest om somrarna. Avena gjorde även turer till Medelhavet - Valencia, Garrneka, Almeria.
Någon gång mellan åren 1911 och 1913 såldes Avena till Ångfartygs AB Thule i Göteborg.
Detta bolag uppgick sedemera i Svenska Lloyd.
År 1921 såldes Avena till Grekland och fick namnet Zannis.
I januari 1922 förliste hon på öppet vatten utanför Grekland. Hon var då på resa mellan Salenica och Genoa med järnrör. Hon sjönk "44 miles N. W. of Sapientza".
1823 flyttade skotske affärsmannen William Thorburn till Uddevalla. Han lade grunden till ett familjeföretag som under ett och ett halvt sekel hade största betydelse för Uddevallas ekonomi. William Thorburn tog fasta på den engelska efterfrågan på havre till alla de hästar som drog Londons cabs och landsvägsdiligenser. Firman Thorburn och söner köpte upp havre från bönderna i Bohuslän, Västergötland och Dalsland. Jordbruket inriktades alltmer på havreodling.
1867 startade William Thorburn ångbåtsförbindelse Uddevalla - London under namnet Ångbåtsaktiebolaget Avena. Avena betyder just havre. De ingående fartygen var S/S Avena, S/S Sitona, S/S Annona och S/S Pollux.

Ångfarttyget AVENA ägd Chales Thorburn m.fl. Var byggd 1873 i Sunderland. Hde tidigare hetat GLENISLA. Skeppare var år 1909 J TH E Wetterström.
Gick i många år på traden havre till England och med kol tillbaka till Uddevalla.
