HistoryMax D Schwab var bördig från Köln där den schwabska familjen sedan två generationer sysslat med pipfabrikation. Farfadern David Schwab startade en pipfabrik år 1871; hans son Carl Schwab kom i unga år in i verksamheten och efterträdde sin far. Max D. Schwab växte upp med piporna och praktiserade redan som skolgosse i faderns fabrik.
Efter avslutade universitetsstudier inträdde han som försäljningschef i firman år 1922. I hans arbete ingick mycket resande. Han hade därvidlag kontakter med Sverige. Något som han senare hade användning för när de politiska förhållandena i Tyskland på 1930-talet försvårade för judar att driva företag. 1936 emigrerade Max D. Schwab till Sverige. Han valde att slå sig ner i Uddevalla efter rekommendationer av landshövding Malte Jacobsson.
Den ekonomiska krisen i Bohuslän var betydande. Många gick arbetslösa. Energiska försök att starta nya industrier gjordes på många platser. En av de mest lyckade satsningarna blev den pipfabrik, Skandinaviska Pipfabriken - i folkmun Skapi, som Max D. Schwab lade grunden till i Uddevalla. Pipor av briarrot och björk tillverkades i fabriken som efter en blygsam start i en källarlokal kom att sysselsätta 80-talet personer i en nyuppförd fabriksbyggnad (1946). Några år före sin död startade han Uddevalla metallvarufabrik. I en angränsade byggnad tillverkades de lättmetallsartiklar (ex. pipringar, piptappar, pipkratsar) som behövdes för en fungerade pipa.
Den 18 oktober 1947 dog Max D. Schwab endast 48 år gammal. Dödsorsak var blodpropp i hjärtat. Närmast sörjande var en dotter Marion samt en syster i Equador.
Max D. Schwab jordfästes på Sigelhults kyrkogård i Uddevalla som vid den tiden var nyanlagd. En granitsten prydde hans vård; stenen togs bort av kyrkogårdsförvaltningen i början av 2000-talet.
I museets arkiv finns en förteckning överlämnad 1958 från Advokatfirma Mannheimer, Göteborg som upptar det antal konstföremål som Uddevalla museum erhållit enligt hans testamente. "2 oljem. av Marianne von Werfkin [Werefkin] 800:-" börjar förteckningen med.
