Någon gång på 1100-talet uppfördes i Ytterby en liten kyrka, ca 8x7 meter.
Innan medeltiden tagit slut förlängdes den. Ett torn tillbyggdes 1670, och 1699 genomgick kyrkan en ombyggnad.
Vid mitten av 1800-talet ansågs kyrkan emellertid både för liten och nedsliten. Man sålde inredningen på auktion 1872 (en del av inventarierna har hamnat i Ytterby nuvarande kyrka). Murarna fick dock stå kvar. Dessa är det enda som i dag återstår av kyrkan.
I nordvästra hörnet av kyrkruinens långhus kan man beskåda två stenhuvuden, huggna i låg relief, båda sedda framifrån. Enligt traditionen föreställer de S:t Halvard och en okänd kvinna (S:t Halvard var Kristianias, dvs Oslos, skyddshelgon).
På södra långhusmuren finns också egendomliga stenar, en långsmal häll och en betydligt tunnare list, i folkmun kallade "likkistan" och "locket". Antagligen har någon begravts där vid tiden för kyrkans byggande.
I kyrkoruinen hålls gudstjänst sommartid. Även vigselförrättningar förekommer.
