Direktören Martin Holterman i Ostindiska kompaniet ägde Åby gård. 1782 skänkte han 3000 daler silvermynt till Fässbergs församling + ett nybyggt skolhus och trädgård på gårdens ägor vid Åby by. Detta är den äldsta donationen inom Mölndal. I skolan skulle 10 fattiga barn undervisas i "kristendom, skrivande och något räknande". Det var alltså inte fråga om att lära barnen läsa - det förutsattes de kunna - utan om utbildning för enklare affärsverksamhet. Kristendomskunskapen var obligatorisk i alla skolor. Senare tillkom även möjlighet att studera språk enligt överenskommelse med läraren Palmdahl, som fanns vid skolan från 1834 till mitten av 1860-talet. I början fungerade klockaren som lärare, han var ju socknens barnalärare, innan folkskolan tillkom 1842 med krav på seminarieutbildade lärare.
Änkefru Charlotta Holterman utökade donationen 1794 efter makens död. I skolan gick fler barn än de 10 frieleverna, 20-30 barn omtalas. Läsningen pågick hela året 8-12 och 2-6, senare slutade man kl 4 1/5 - 1/9 och hade lediga eftermiddagar onsdag och lördag. Vid midsommar var det examen, sedan hade eleverna 14 dagars lov. Vinterlovet var från mitten av december till mitten av januari, och påskveckan var också ledig. Om själva undervisningen vet man inte så mycket, eftersom skolarkivet inte bevarats.
Holtermans skola fanns kvar till 1875. Då hade donationens ändamål ändrats, och man byggde i stället ett barnhem kombinerat med småskola. Barnhemsgatan erinrar fortfarande om denna inrättning. 1914 brann barnhemmet, och förmodligen även arkivet. 1915 byggdes ett nytt barnhem på samma tomt, som avskildes från Åby gård. Till Holtermanska fonden var även kopplad en gåva på 10.000 kronor till kläder åt barnen genom fröken Josefina Noréns testamente 1910.
1929 överlämnades barnhemmet till Mölndals stad, och Holtermanska donationen skulle därefter användas till sommarkolonier för barn från staden. Fabriksarbetare hade ingen semester - inte förrän 1938 kom lagen om två veckors semester för alla. Barn till fattiga eller ensamstående föräldrar fick gå ensamma hemma eller på gatorna under somrarna, när det var skollov. Många av dem behövde komma bort och få lantluft några sommarveckor. Därför ordnades sommarlovskolonier, ofta med hjälp av donationer men också med stöd från kommuner och landsting.
Charlotta Holterman hade visserligen skrivit 1794, att om skolan upphörde, borde medlen i stället användas för ett änkehus, men 1929 var det inte längre så aktuellt att bygga sådana, så det blev barnverksamhet i annan form i stället.
