HistoryUppe på ett krön, sydost om Kållereds kyrka, ligger Högen - eller Backen som det också kallas, ett gammalt hemman som består av två gårdar. Högengårdarna har funnits sedan åtminstone 1610-talet men är troligen äldre än så.
På en karta från 1812 finns de båda gårdarna utritade med mangårdshus och ladugårdar placerade mittemot varandra. Denna öppna gårdsstruktur, som innebär att uthuslängan ligger parallellt med bostadshuset, är karakteristisk för det äldre byggnadsskicket i området.
Vid slutet av seklet har gårdsstrukturen förändrats, och de friliggande husen har byggts samman till två kringbyggda gårdar. Utveckling mot en mer sluten gårdsstruktur tycks vara ganska vanlig bland gårdarna i Kållered. Förändringen sker under 1800-talet och kan delvis kopplas till sågverksamhetens utveckling.
Influenserna till den slutna gårdsformen kom söderifrån, från Skåne och södra Halland, där den helt kringbyggda gården tidigt var vanligt förekommande. I Bohuslän hade man vanligtvis mer öppna gårdsformer, med en rak eller L-formad uthuslänga, placerad parallellt med bostadshuset. Då Kållered ligger i en gränszon mellan dessa områden, förekom båda gårdstyperna inom socknen. Fram till 1800-talet var dock den öppna gårdsformen dominerande.
I den ena av Högengårdarna är den slutna gårdsformen fortfarande bevarad. Här ligger också ett av socknens äldsta mangårdshus, med delvis bevarade utskjutande knutar. Byggnaden finns med på en karta från 1812, men delar av huset är troligtvis äldre än så. Det ursprungliga huset kan ha varit en timrad framkammarstuga, som sedan byggts till i omgångar. Dess ena gavel är sammanbyggd med ladugården, och på så sätt skapas en nästan helt kringbyggd gårdsplan. Ladugårdens fähusdel är uppförd i knuttimmer, medan övriga delar byggts med reglar och plank. På ena sidan finns ett portlider, som leder in till en stensatt gårdsplan.
Den andra gården härjades av en brand under våren 1999, då ladugården brann ned, och gårdsstrukturen är därför upplöst. Runt gården finns dock en del spår från äldre tider, i form av terrasseringar och breda stenmurar. Längs med uppfartsvägen ligger ett äldre, ombyggt uthus. På tomten finns också en äldre stentrappa, som leder ner till ett i marken utgrävt utrymme. Rummet täcks av en stor häll och har troligen fungerat som källare.
Idag utgör Högengårdarna en agrar solitär i det av modern bebyggelse och modernt vägnät präglade landskapet, men tidigare dominerade jordbruket i området. Högengårdarna utgjorde då en naturlig del i ett större jordbrukslandskap, med omfattande åkermark och ett flertal gårdsbildningar. Tillsammans med Backen och Kållereds stom* bildade Högen en klunga med gårdar och genom bebyggelsen gick vägen till Kållereds kyrka. Innan det moderna vägnätet byggdes ut var Södra Kyrkvägen huvudleden genom området. Delar av kyrkvägen finns fortfarande kvar, och det var här som bönderna från socknens västra byar gick, när de skulle besöka kyrkan.
*Stom betydde att det tillhörde kyrkan och avkastningen gick till prästens lön.
