Sveriges köp av Phönix D.III 222 var resultatet av en flyguppvisning av två österrikiska piloter på Gärdet i Stockholm 1919. Edmund Sparmanns och Max Perinis imponerande uppvisning i var sitt Phönix-flygplan ledde till att arméflyget året efter köpte in ett 20-tal Phönix D.II. Ytterligare tio licenstillverkades senare på Centrala Flygverkstaden på Malmen, utanför Linköping.
Ett antal Phönix D.II och D. III överfördes från armens- och marinens flygväsenden till flygvapnet, när det bildades 1926. Phönixjagaren blev flygvapnets första jaktflygplan och fick beteckningen J 1.
Under en serie flygprov med en J 1 i mitten av 1920-talet, blev piloten Nils Söderberg den första svensk som räddade sig från ett militärflygplan med fallskärm. Vid ett av proven hamnade han i spinn och motorn stannade, men han räddade livet med ett fallskärmshopp från 400 meters höjd.
Flygvapenmuseums J 1 Phönix D.III 222 är den enda svenska Phönixjagare som finns kvar i dag. Flygplanet kasserades 1928 på grund av ett haveri – fem år senare tog flygvapnet resterade J 1:or ur tjänst.
Kuriosa
Den Phönix D.III 222 som visas på Flygvapenmuseum kom på järnväg till Malmslätt och Flygkompaniet 1920.
Det har rått en del osäkerhet om huruvida museets Phönix är en D.II eller en D.III. Museets intendenter har tidigare belyst flygplanet med infraröd kamera för att försöka hitta originalmärkningen från Österrike. Då visade det sig att just de delarna där märkningen skulle sitta var utbytta – kanske på grund av haveriet på 1920-talet.

Arméflyget var organiserat så att Flygkompaniet var en del av fälttelegrafkåren. Flygkompaniet bestod av kårexpedition/Stab, flygskola, jaktflygskola, övningsflygavdelning, spanarskolan, skjutskolan Hästholmen, Flygavdelningen i Boden, Tygverkstäderna ofta kallade Flygverkstäderna Malmen (FVM).
