Gloster Gladiator var Sveriges modernaste jaktflygplan när det levererades från England 1938. Det var flygvapnets första flygplan med täckt sittbrunn och den var lätt att manövrera. Men i en internationell jämförelse var konstruktionen redan omodern.
Flygplanet kunde även förses med skidor på landningsställen i stället för hjul.
Den svenska flygledningen beställde 55 stycken Gloster Gladiator, som fick beteckningen J 8. De placerades 1938 på flygvapnets första jaktflottilj, F 8 Barkarby, som skulle försvara Stockholm. När Sovjetunionen anföll Finland 1939 sattes den svenska frivilligflottiljen F 19 upp i Finland. Där blev tolv J 8:or placerade, dessa var också utrustade med skidor.
Efter några månader i Finland flögs flygplanet tillbaka till Sverige och F 5 och senare F 20. Det avskrevs den 30 juni 1945. Då fördes det över till de flyghistoriska samlingarna på Malmen i Linköping. Den hade då en total flygtid på 699 timmar.
Kuriosa
Flygvapenmuseums J 8 Gloster Gladiator är märkt med en blå svastika, hakkors. Den var det finländska flygvapnets nationalitetsbeteckning. När J 8:orna skulle flygas tillbaka till Sverige målade man över beteckningen med olika fantasifulla figurer, till exempel en dödskalle eller en kulspruteskytt.

- History
1936 års försvarsbeslut innehåll en uppsättning av Svea flygflottilj vid Barkarby utanför Stockholm. Ett indragningsbeslut för flottiljen kom 1958 varefter flottiljen övergick till 'F 8 depå' år 1961. Från och med 1961 fram till nedläggning år 1974 var benämningen 'Svea flygkår'.
