Användes till att göra utvändiga gänger med på t ex skruvar och bultar. Biten som skulle gängas sattes fast i svarven.
Istället för ytterstål har i senare tid använts gängkloppor, men vid reparationer av gamla föremål har Sten Gustafsson använt ytterstål ända till 1960.

Ahlqvist & Gustavssons Metallgjuteri var ett av de äldsta igång varande företagen i Uppsala 1960. Det startades 1854 och låg då på Dragarbrunnsgatan 22. 1882 flyttade företaget till Dragarbrunnsgatan 26. Detta hus revs i april - maj 1960 och företaget flyttade till Kungsgatan.
1931 började Sten Gustavsson i företaget. Han var då kompanjon med Gösta Ahlqvist, sonson till firmagrundaren. Dessa båda hade sin verkstad på nedre botten i ett hus inne på gården, Dragarbrunnsgatan 26, medan Gösta Ahlqvist fader, J. A. Ahlqvist hade sin verkstad en trappa upp. När fadern dog övertog Gösta Ahlqvist och Sten Gustavsson lokalen och verktygen. Enligt givaren härrör antagligen de flesta gängverktygen, rörtängerna o.s.v. från J. A. Ahlqvists tid.
Gängverktygen UM10488-10489, UM22820-22836 och UM22837-22849 har sporadiskt använts ända till 1960, bland annat vid reparationer av gamla föremål med skruvar, muttrar och dylikt av ålderdomlig modell.
Gåva i april 1960 från Sten Gustavsson, innehavare av Ahlqvist & Gustavssons Metallgjuteri, Dragarbrunnsgatan 26, Uppsala.
