Funnen i samband med arkeologisk undersökning av Örsmossen, Tensta socken, Uppland 1912-1913 utförd av naturgeografen Rutger Sernander. Båtarna hittades i samband med arbetet att dokumentera lagerföljden i mossen.
Fyndet i Örsmossen bestod av flera rituellt förstörda stockbåtar Tillsammans med båtarna hittades resterna efter en delvis eldhärjad träplattform och altare ute i mossen. Runt plattformen var stockbåtarna placerade. Alla båtar utom en är från vikingatid, den yngsta båten är från äldre medeltid.
Ytterligare en båt finns bevarad på Tensta hembygdsgård.
Fyndet har ingått i Uppsala universitets samlingar. Uppsala universitets rektor Anders Hallberg beslutade den 16 november 2006 om överförandet av universitetets etnologiska samling (B-samlingen och EC-samlingen) till Upplandsmuseets samlingar. Den etnologiska samlingen flyttades den 8 december 2006 från Museum Gustavianums magasin i Husbyborg, Uppsala till Upplandsmuseets magasin i Morgongåva.
