Ur uniform för franska generalstaben, bestående av mössa, dolma och byxor. Uniformen buren av general Rappe såsom kapten i fransk-tyska kriget 1870-71.
Axel Rappe var en av Sveriges mest framstående officerare under slutet av 1800-talet. När fransk-tyska kriget bröt ut 1870, befann sig Rappe på en militär studieresa i Frankrike. Han lyckades då vinna inträde i den franska armén som generalstabsofficer. Han utmärkte sig för sitt mod och dekorerades med hederslegionens kors på slagfältet.
Hemma i Sverige gick Rappes militära bana snabbt uppåt. Från major 1874 befordrades han i raska steg till generalmajor och generalstabschef 1885. 1892 utsågs han till krigsminister och var drivande i att ersätta indelningsverket med en värnpliktsarmé. 1903 blev Rappe slutligen general. Han kom även att tilldelas ett stort antal utmärkelser. Förutom för sitt mod, gjorde Rappe sig även berömd för sin gudstro och plikttrogenhet.
En dag i oktober 1895 hade Rappe setts korsa Norrbro iförd hög svart hatt till sin uniform. Förtvivlad över sitt reglementsbrott bad han kung Oscar II om att få bli disciplinerad. Han dömdes då till 48 timmars arrest – i sitt eget rum.
År 1867 infördes för generalstabsofficerare svart dolma med fem svarta bröstsnören och på ärmarna svarta, ungerska knutar. Troligen blev de sedan förändrade; i stället för fem blev det sju snören och de ungerska knutarna på ärmarna blev av guldsnören.
