Didrik Bildt från Morlanda på Orust deltog i Gustav III:s ryska krig, 1788-1790. Som major tjänstgjorde han i södra Finland och deltog vid affären vid Elgö, natten mellan den 29 och 30 september 1789. Där landsteg han med 200 man och stormade ett ryskt kustbatteri. Det blev en fullständig svensk seger. 200 ryssar stupade medan svenskarna endast förlorade 60 man.
Bildt själv blev värjstungen i kroppen och skjuten i ena benet. Syrtuten, har därför en lapp på skörtet. Efter striden fick benet amputeras. Bildt skickade då ett brev till sin trolovade Margareta Elisabet Petterson: I gåven eder tro och loven åt en krigare men ej åt en krympling. Förthy återsänder jag denna ring. Svaret blev: Jag älskade edert hjärta och ej edert ben. Behållen I ringen!
Bildt återvände med träben och överstes rang till Morlanda. Han gifte sig med Margareta och fick fyra barn. Han levde med sitt träben i nästan 60 år och dog först vid 92 års ålder.
