Efter Trettioåriga krigets slut år 1648 kom Vorpommern, som idag är delar av norra Polen och Tyskland, att tillhöra Sverige. Området var svenskt fram till 1814, då Sverige slöt fred med Danmark genom att byta till sig Norge mot Vorpommern. Bakgrunden till tavlan finner man i Pommern några år tidigare, nämligen 1807. Napoleons styrkor stred mot svenskar i området och under en av drabbningarna skadades denne kapten från Älvsborgs regemente.
Under 1800-talets första 15 år präglades Europa av Napoleonkrigen, där den största konflikten till stor del låg mellan Frankrike och Storbritannien. Dock kom även Ryssland att spela en avgörande roll, bland annat "förlorade" Sverige under denna tid Finland till Ryssland.
Sveriges roll i krigen har främst med den så kallade tredje koalitionen att göra, där Sverige, England, Ryssland och Österrike gick samman mot Napoleon. Sveriges kung, Gustav VI Adolf, förklarade krig mot Frankrike i oktober 1805 men strax därpå visade Preussen en viss fientlighet mot Sverige. Preussen, som låg granne med svenska Vorpommern, hade nämligen gentemot Frankrike förbundit sig att upprätthålla neutraliteten i Nordtyskland. Svenskarna kunde således inte lämna "Svenska Pommern" utan måste stanna kvar.
Tavlan har för det tidiga 1800-talet ett sällsynt motiv. Den föreställer en viss kapten vid Älvsborgs regemente, Ulrik von Schwartzenhoff, som levde mellan åren 1755 och 1821, och dog som ungkarl. Släkten Mannerfelt som hade sitt stamgods nära Hof, Schwartzenhoffs gård, fick ärva bland annat en del dokument och fyra porträtt, varav ett var den aktuella tavlan.
Redan hösten 1804 reste kaptenen tillsammans med en bataljon på 546 man från Älvsborg regemente till Vorpommern med anledning av oroligheterna i Europa. Bataljonen formades till fyra kompanier, där kaptenen kom att bli chef för det så kallade Sekondmajorens kompani.
Man kan säga att bakgrunden till motivet börjar den 14 mars 1807, det datum som Älvsborgs regemente deltog i ett slag om befästningen vid Kattenhagen, nära den dåvarande svenska staden Stralsund. Här blev ovannämnde kapten von Schwartzenhoff både skadad och fängslad av Napoleons fransmän. En fransk fältskär tog sig an honom och från bröstet tog man ut en kula och en västknapp. En andra västknapp, som följt med kulan in i bröstet, kunde inte tas bort med fältskärens relativt enkla verktyg.
Två dagar senare fördes kaptenen till ett sjukhus i staden Greifswald där han blev "lasaretthjon" en hel månad. Enligt hans egna anteckningar ska han ha haft feber 24 dygn på grund av såren, och inte förrän natten till den 8 april kunde han få "tämlig sömn". Det kom att dröja ända till början av augusti innan han fick komma hem till sin gård Hof i Sverige.
I ett papper som kapten von Schwartzenhoff lämnade efter sig står det att han betalade en målare P. Wäström i Stralsund den 29 juni 1807 för två porträtt. Dock säger den traditionella tillkomsten av tavlan att en fransk officer målade den i beundran för den svenske kaptenens oerhörda lugn och kallblodighet under sårets första enkla behandling.
Ramen som omsluter tavlan sägs enligt vissa källor inte vara den ursprungliga, men den är onekligen samtida. Armémuseums medarbetare Lotta Lindley har under en längre tid arbetat med konserveringen av just ramen, där hon bland annat återställt hörnen och även den detaljrika blomornamentiken. Tilläggas bör att alla ingrepp hon gjort är reversibla, det går med andra ord att återställa ramen utan att den tagit skada.
