Text in English: The sculpture belongs to a group of five shields. Although they vary greatly in shape, all can be defined as heraldic shields.
On its recovery, flecks of gold could be observed in different places but they were mostly concentrated on the bird''s head.
Location on ship
All the shields belong somewhere on the stern, but their exact positions have not been determined. The back of the shield No. 02037 is smooth and therefore probably was placed against a smooth and straight wall.
Iconography
The reason for classifying these four more or less shield-like pieces of sculpture in one and the same sculpture group of "heraldic shields" is that each can originally have displayed some sort of painted heraldic device. However, there is no definite proof of this and the question remains open for speculation.
Woodcarver is unknown.
