Josephine Björnberg föddes 25 mars 1874. Hon lärde krukmakaryrket av sin far Alexander Magnus Björnberg (död 30/3 1897 inflyttad från Lekåra till Stora Mellby 1862), som i sin tur ärvt yrket efter sin far C. A. Björnberg (född i Seglora 1/1 1813 död 1877 i Mellby socken på Kvarnbacken). Josephine hade fyra syskon, men det blev hon som övertog och ledde arbetet i krukmakarverkstaden på Kvarnbacken vid Stora Mellby.
Josephine Björnberg uppmärksammades vid den stora konstindustriutställningen sommaren 1909 i Stockholm där hon och fem andra kvinnliga konsthandverkare deltog.
Elin Wägner, som vid denna tid var redaktionssekreterare i Idun, skrev om de sex kvinnliga konsthantverkarna i november 1909. Om Josephine Björnberg skrev hon följande: " Fröken Josephine Björnberg från Kvarnbacken vid Stora Mellby är den som ärft sitt krukmakareyrke från sin farfar och far, autodidakten, som genom brinnande intresse, flit och begåvning drivit upp sitt yrke från hantverk till konsthantverk, som började med att resa till marknaden med fars lerkrus och mjölkbunkar och slutade med att förse Svensk Hemslöjd med vackra och konstnärligt glaserade lergods vi sett under utställningen på hyllorna i Hemslöjds lilla täppa eller på hennes egen hylla i lergodsrummet. Hon är enkel, rättfram, säker och litet karlavulen till det yttre, men de som känna henne närmare, kunna icke nog berömma hennes energi, goda hjärta och humoristiska sinne.
Det karaketeristiska hos hennes krukor ligger mindre i modellerna och mönstren än i glaseringen. Här lyckas hon få fram originella färger och färgkombinationer, som också gjort hennes krukor mycket begärliga."
Josephines syster Tilde, som gift sig med krukmakaregesällen Gustav Eriksson, flyttade senare till Mellby och började med krukmakeritillverkning där. Deras vekstad lades ned på 1950-talet.
I slutet av 1920-talet såldes Kvarnbacken och Josephine och brodern Axel glyttade till en banvaktsstuga i Mellby. Hon dog 1931 fattig och glömd av de flesta.
