År 1877 inrättades en skola för döva barn i Vänersborg, Elfsborgs läns dövstumskola. Den var lokaliserad till andra våningen av Villa Augusta (doktorsvillan), eftersom sjukhuset ännu inte var färdigbyggt och då kunde läkarbostaden hyras ut. Skolan kom att flyttas runt till olika platser i Vänersborg, men 1896 flyttade man in i nybyggda lokaler, där man fortfarande har sin undervisning. Skolan genomgick stora renoveringar inför 100-årsjubiléet 1996, då skolan även fick namnet Vänerskolan.
Från start var tanken att de döva eleverna dels skulle få undervisning, men även en yrkesutbildning för att kunna försörja sig, helt eller delvis. Pojkarna undervisades i hårdslöjd och flickorna i mjukslöjd. Detta utökades senare till snickeri, skomakeri, skrädderi, handarbete, sömnad, vävning, skolkök samt trädgårdskötsel. Därför fanns det yrkesskolor på skolan redan från start fram till 1970-talet. Eleverna fick även kläder, skor, mat och husrum på skolan. Skolans skräddare sydde pojkarnas kläder och flickornas kläder ansvarade handarbetetlärarinnan. Man köpte hela balar med tyg, vilket ledde till att kläderna blev uniformsaktiga.
