Det är inte känt vilket år som Hornborgastugan byggdes. Utifrån historiska kartor framkommer det att platsen där stugan låg finns markerad på en karta över Hornborga bys "tåplatser" från 1818 med littera I 18. Platsen benämndes Sjödahlstäppan. På omkringliggande täppor är byggnaderna avbildade medan det inte finns något hus inritat på Sjödalstäppan. På laga skifteskartan från 1855 finns däremot stugan inritad som en vinkelbyggnad nr 738. Det är möjligt att Hornborgastugan inte fanns 1818 men att den byggdes före 1855. Samtidigt har den markerade täppan formen av en vinkel på 1818 års karta vilken i form och storlek överensstämmer med byggnaden. Antagandet att huset uppfördes omkring sekelskiftet 1800 stärks av det faktum att antalet obesuttna ökade i samband med befolkningsökningen i slutet av 1700-talet och början av 1800-talet. I Västergötland löstes detta problem genom att de obesuttna fick bygga och bo på en mindre värdefull del av byns samfällda mark, den s.k. "tån".
Stugan tillhörde ursprungligen Deragården och den kallades Sjödalsstugan efter dess innehavare släkten Sjödahl, som under flera generationer svarade för klockartjänsten i socknen. Den siste ägaren till stugan livnärde sig som fiskare och skomakare. Hans änka, Cajsa Andersdotter Sjödahl, bodde kvar i stugan till 1896. Till stugan hörde ingen jord men man höll en ko och ett par får. Djuren betade på byns allmänning.
Byggnaden dokumenterades 1898. I en anteckning från 24/2 1898 anges att " gafvelfönstret nog upphugget i en senare tid, brädfordringen å ytterväggarna jämförelsevis nymodiga, hurudant timret kan vara, är svårt att säga. Stugan kan väl svårligen vara äldre än sedan 1600-talet om en så gammal, de målade väggfasta möblerna antyda denna tid". Det ålderdomliga utförandet med låg takhöjd, små fönster och dörrar o.s.v. kan lika väl vara ett tecken på fattigdom. Att huset hade både bostad och fähus under samma tak kan också vara en följd av att de boende var obesuttna. Eftersom i stort sett allt byggnadsmaterial byttes ut i samband med flytten till Skansen går det inte att i efterhand uppskatta vilket år den ursprungliga stugan byggdes.
Det finns några brev bevarade som berättar hur det gick till när Hornborgastugan kom till Skansen. I ett brev till Artur Hazelius daterat 2 juni 1898 meddelas att "Sjödahlsskans hus" är till salu. I beskrivningen av byggnaden nämns att " en del är sammansatt af kullersten Fahlbondens älsklings byggnadsämne". I slutet av september samma år revs stugan och flyttades till Skansen. Två timmermän från socknen svarade för transporten och återuppbyggnaden.
Hornborgastugan flyttades alltså till Skansen 1898 och var med bland de tidigaste byggnaderna som sattes upp i området. Arthur Hazelius skötte själv korrespondensen vid insamlandet, stugan föll väl inom ramen för hans avsikt att samla in byggnader från olika landskap för att visa landsbygdens traditionella byggnadsskick. Insamlingen av byggnader, möbler och textilier gjordes med noggrannhet och eftertanke. Idag står Hornborgastugan oförändrad kvar på sin ursprungliga plats på Skansen och visar fortfarande den miljö som Arthur Hazelius skapade som ett exempel på en backstuga från Västergötland.
