Bakgrund musikliv:
Under 1800-talets andra halva och början av 1900-talet var det populärt med blåsmusik. Den klassiska sättningen i en mässingssextett var Eb kornett, Bb kornett, Althorn, Tenorbasun, Tenorhorn, Tuba samt Trummor. I musikkårerna tillkom andra instrument såsom klarinetter och olika helikon, ibland till och med saxofon.
Militärmusiken, en av hörnpelarna i Sveriges musikliv under 1800-talet, fick en civil motsvarighet. Det startade i England – industrialismens vagga – och då ofta knutet till någon industri. The Brass Band News rapporterar i oktober 1885 att en publik på närmare 100 000 personer varit närvarande vid The Annual Brass Band Contest i Belle Vue Zoological Gardens, Manchester. Även i Sverige var den tidiga civila mässingsmusiken oftast knutet till någon industri, framför allt i bruksorter. Drivkrafterna för en brukspatron att stödja en musikkår var flera. Förutom ett altruistiskt intresse att ge ”hjälp åt den enskilde att utveckla sin egen duglighet att bibringa arbetarna kultur och bildning” fanns även en önskan att stävja det utbredda alkoholmissbruket.
Efterhand spred det sig så att många folkrörelser hade egna musikkårer, exempelvis fackföreningarna, skarpskytterörelsen, nykterhetsrörelsen, arbetareföreningarna och frikyrkor
För den enskilde var det ofta ett sätt att skapa sig en egen profil och höja sitt anseende. ”Att vara medlem i en bruksorkester kunde betyda att man behandlades som en tjänsteman”
Repertoaren bestod både av marscher, utdrag ur operor och operetter och annan populärmusik.
Musiken i Trollhättan:
Det fanns ett flertal olika orkestrar i Trollhättan med namn som Harmonia från IOGT, Heimdal i Strömslund, ”Järn och Metall” samt exempelvis Musikföreningarna National, Stjärnan och Flora.
En viktig händelse varje år var Musikens dag, första söndagen i maj. Uppgifterna om vilket år det startade varierar men Trollhättan firade officiellt 125-årsjubileum 2017 och genomförde Musikens dag även 2018 och 2019, för att förhoppningsvis återupptas efter pandemin. Andra exempel på spelningar var 1:a maj demonstrationer i Göteborg, lustresor med båt upp till Vänern och till Läckö slott, vid Andrées avfärd från Göteborg med expeditionerna till Spetsbergen 1896 och Nordpolen 1897 samt på badhotellet i Marstrand med bla Kung Oskar som åhörare men i även i Trollhättans parker och till dans i ”Lunnen”
Ytterligare exempel var på olika begravningar. I kassaboken (se VMGDIG00574) finns 1911 upptaget en intäkt på 5:20 för att man spelat på fru Stridsbergs begravning. På Karl Anderssons egen begravning 1935 mötte Järn- och Metalls musikkår upp. Gissningsvis hade Karl själv varit verksam i den kåren också.
Musikföreningarna genomförde även egna utflykter. Bland bilderna finns två foton från en Musikföreningsutflykt till Björke 1919 (se VMGDIG00579 och VMGDIG00585) och i kassaboken hittar vi kostnaderna för resan. Man köpte till exempel 60 tågbiljetter à 1:60 kr och 100 sillar för 20 kr.

Realexamen 1968 och Studentexamen 1971 i Vänersborg, Efter studier i Lund (MSc) valde Sture att bli kvar i Skåne och har arbetet i flera olika typer av befattningar på Leo läkemedel, Nederman och Tetra Pak. Efter pensionering vid 60 års ålder har Sture arbetat 10 år som Senior rådgivare för bla Ernst&Young. Sture har tagit hand om familjearkivet/släktarkivet och digitaliserat detta.
