Myntet hittades sensommaren 2024 av arkeologer från länsmuseet som var med och övervakade ett dräneringsarbete precis framför (söder om) södra längan av Visingsborgs slottsruin.
I det omkring 2x3 meter stora och drygt en meter djupa schaktet gjordes flera intressanta fynd och iakktatagelser. I botten fanns en stenpackning, som i sin tur överlagrade en eldstad. Förrutom en stor mängd djurben hittades här en pilspets, en kniv, ett beslag, två nitar samt detta mynt med vikingatida datering.
