Didrik von Essen lämnade efter sig omkring 1200 glasnegativ och ungefär lika många monterade positiv som tillfallit Östergötlands museum. Den bevarade delen av hans fotografiska produktion spänner från 1880-talets sista år till åtminstone 1915. Till största delen utgör samlingen dokumentation av hans hemstad Linköping i förändring. Vid sidan av den typen motiv förekommer landskapsstudier som utgjort förlagor för hans parallella landskapsmåleri.
