År 1904 får John Bauer tillsammans med andra konstnärer i uppdrag av förläggare C.A.V. Lundholm att medarbeta i ett bokverk om Lappland. För detta ändamål vistas han i Lapplandsfjällen under sommaren och gör skisser och fotograferar. Bauers bidrag blir elva stora akvareller avbildade som helsides färgplanscher och tre laverade pennteckningar inlagda i texten. Illustrationerna utförs i efterhand i Stockholm. Det färdiga verket utkommer 1908 under titeln Lappland, det stora svenska framtidslandet. Mötet med vildmarks-naturen och samernas främmande kultur blir en upplevelse John Bauer kommer att bära med sig.
