Caje Huss (1921-2007) växte upp i Helsingfors. Hon påbörjade konststudier som måste avbrytas på grund av andra världskriget. Innan kriget var slut hade hon gift sig och flyttat till Sverige. Dottern Mona föddes i Stockholm och Caje ägnade några år åt småbarnsysslor.
År 1949 återupptog hon konststudierna, först i Otte Skölds målarskola sedan Konsthögskolan, båda i Stockholm.
Till Uddevalla kom familjen Huss i slutet av 1950-talet. Sedan dess har hon varit staden trogen. På senare tid har hon i pressen fått epitetet "Uddevalla konstnärskårs grand old lady".
Hennes måleri bjuder på såväl motiv från det bohuslänska landskapet som från Lofoten, på inkännande porträtt och färgrika stilleben. Under 1970-talets miljökamp levererade Caje bland annat banderoller inför Kynnefjälls- och Barsebäcksmarscherna samt vykort och affischer.
För Kroppskultur i Uddevalla har hon tecknat motiven till en serie samlartallrikar.
"Vid havet", ridån i Bohusläns museums hörsal är en av Cajes fyra stora ridåer. Bildväven utfördes till öppnandet av museet för 20 år sedan. Caje fick hjälp med framställningen av två väverskor i Uddevalla, Marianne West och Gerd Jonsson. De övriga stora textila verken är "En droppe i havet" på Ramnerödsskolan i Uddevalla, "Livets träd" för gymnasieskolan, Köping samt "Vågspel" för Riddarfjärdsteatern i Stockholm.
Matsalen i Ödeborgs bruksskola, Dalsland, pryds av ett stort textiltryck utfört 1989.

(Egentligen handlar texten om Nils Asp, en kär vän till Caje, men den beskriver också hur Caje Huss och hennes familj fick fint stöd att acklimatisera sig i sin nya hemstad Uddevalla.) En dag i slutet av 1950-talet sattes jag inför faktum att vi skulle flytta från Stockholm till Uddevalla.
Något oroad berättade jag detta för en vän, Märta Lindström, som arbetade på Kulturen i Lund. Hennes spontana reaktion var - "Caje, då kan jag lova att du får trevligt, för där bor en fantastiskt intressant och mycket speciell person som heter Nils Asp". Hon berättade att hon och Nisse varit kurskamrater på Konstfack i Stockholm och som kamrat och vän hade han gjort ett outplånligt intryck på henne. Detta lyckades hon överföra på mig - Uddevalla lika med Nisse Asp.
Och det goda ödet sammanförde oss ganska snart, han blev en av våra första vänner här.
Nils goda kollegiala kamratlighet fick mig snart att börja trivas i Uddevalla. Han introducerade mig i det konstliv, som då fanns här, såg till att jag fick deltaga i vissa samlingsutställningar m m samt få nya kontakter bland stadens personligheter.
I Gun och Nils Asps vackra och spännande hem kände vi, min man Gillis och jag, oss alltid välkomna och otaliga är det goda stunder och de underbart roliga fester som vi fick uppleva hos dem. Allra mest komprimerade blev de sena kvällarna, när vi dök ned i Nisses privata revir. Där jobbade han bl a med sina fina träsnitt. Arbetsrummet var ganska litet, men Nils ordningssinne var imponerande, där fanns dokumenterat och arkiverat det mesta av vad han arbetat med under åren. Det var en riktig guldgruva av hans egna och kollegors arbeten, blandat med de mest otroliga och fantasieggande prylar. En synnerligen surrealistisk atmosfär, laddad med minnen och överraskningar. Där satt vi ofta, hans vänner, och filosoferade över den märkliga värld vi lever i. Och vår vän Nisses hugskott, humor och bisarra historier lyste som fyrverkerier i den mörka natten.
Hans djupa originalitet förnekade sig aldrig. Hans spirituella och "galna" påhitt förundrade ofta hans vänner, men de hade alltid en filosofisk undermening.
Han kunde ringa upp vilken tid på dygnet som helst - i sällskapligt kontaktbehov, eller ifall han fått en idé om att förändra världen på något sätt. Hans rättskänsla förnekade sig aldrig. Han fann på mycket originella sätt att angripa mänskliga svagheter - på ett fint och ironiskt sätt.
Nisses värme och hjälpsamhet inför en kamrat med svårigheter tog sig rörande uttryck. Jag glömmer aldrig hur underbart han pysslade om mig en vårdag, när jag fick följa med till deras härliga Bua. Jag var då svårt och smärtsamt handikappad av min dåliga höftled som senare blev opererad. Jag fick känna mig som en prinsessa under hans ömsinta omtanke.
Och det var faktiskt vännen Nils som fick undertecknad att våga sig på ett helt nytt uttrycksmedel - det var han som fick mig att börja med textila kompositioner, för vilket jag är evigt tacksam.
Nisse var ju en älskad och duktig teckningslärare. hans elever uppskattade honom och flera av dem är det som idag, tack vare hans inspirerande undervisning, funnit sin egenart som konstnär.
Nils stora längtan var ju dock att få arbeta på heltid med si egen konstnärliga verksamhet. Han talade ofta om hur fint det skulle bli när han äntligen blev pensionerad - då skulle det minsann jobbas! Men det bittra, att då drabbades han av sin svåra sjukdom - det synes hårt och orättvist. Nisse var en fin och seriös konstnär och skicklig grafiker och alla vi som kände honom ser det som en stor förlust att vi inte fick se hans fullbordande av sitt konstnärskap.
Jag saknar Nils Asp så oerhört mycket, han var i grunden en så god och vänskapsfast person - han var en medmänniska som vi alla behöver.
Men han lever fritt i vårt minne genom sina konstverk.
