En av de två interiörerna i Utställningen "På kung Oscars tid".
Emelie Appelbergs salong:
Året är 1900 och Emelie Appelberg har just blivit änka sedan hennes man Herman avlidit. Hon är en av Vänersborgs rikaste kvinnor och bor kvar i sin och Hermans storslagna sjurumslägenhet med tillhörande tamburer, jungfrukammare och kök. Emelie äger inte bara lägenheten utan hela huset med flera hyresgäster och butiker i bottenvåningen. Granne ligger landshövdingens residens och från sin våning har Emelie utsikt över torget.
Miljön är en fri rekonstruktion av hur ett av Emelies mindre rum, en salong, kunde ha sett ut. Huset byggdes 1871 och inredningen är typisk för ett borgarhem under den oscarianska tiden. Möblerna står tätt i rummet, på väggarna hänger rikligt med familjeporträtt och andra målningar. Hyllor och bord är fyllda av prydnadssaker och på bordet ligger det obligatoriska fotoalbumet. Färgerna går gärna i rött eller grönt.
Emelies och Hermans hem hade brunnit ner till grunden 1870. Dock ägde de även herrgården Nabbensberg utanför staden, där Emelies föräldrar tidigare bott. Därför kom många av Emelies släktklenoder att klara sig från branden för att sedan flyttas över från herrgården till den nya lägenheten vid torget. Därför ser vi bland föremålen allt från kinesiskt 1700-talsporslin, porträtt och målningar från 1800-talets mitt fram till det sena 1800-talets möblemang.
Eftersom Emelie och Herman inte hade några barn lever Emelie, efter Hermans död ensam i den stora lägenheten, tillsammans med pigan Johanna Olofsdotter. För praktiska göromål hade Emelie också hjälp av konstnären och bildhuggaren Frans Johansson – som hon kallade ”Tusenkonstnären”.
